Source of the South Tyne Circular (July)

A strenuous circular walk of approx 11 miles mainly on public footpaths but involving a section across open moorland.

The principal aim was to walk from the actual source of the river along the South Tyne Trail back to Garrigill.  To give greater variety a route from Garrigill to the source was then chosen to minimize duplication.

In particular the route from Tynehead up Clargill Burn and over Tynehead Fell brought us to the summit of Bellbeaver Rigg with its extensive views across to Great Dun Fell.

From here it is downhill all the way and one quickly arrives at the source.

One of the many highlights on the way back to Garrigill is the waterfall at Dorthgill.
